The cost of photography: Why is photography a lifelong investment?

You get what you pay for, but why does professional photography (especially wedding photography) cost so much? Well, I've got an answer for you!

Did you know the average professional Calgary wedding photographer would cost you about $4000-$6000 for a standard 8 hours of coverage? But did you know that photography is the only thing from your wedding that will last you a lifetime? So, in perspective, to get something for life, that cost is a steal! Plus, something that couples may not think of initially is that there is no do-over when it comes to wedding photography! Having the right professional photographer is essential to capture one of the most important days in your life. Settings, variety, angles, emotions, looks, composition, and direction are critical to fully capturing a wedding and leaving your clients satisfied with their investment.

But here is the reality: that number is not made from thin air to scalp couples, as many may think. There are many business parts to back up and justify that amount besides the experience and creativity. Here is a list of some of the things photographers account for in their cost:

  • Hours of Correspondence and meetings with clients

  • Website updates and new material (blogs) updates

  • Socials & Networking

  • Marketing & Strategy Planning

  • Photo Gallery and Software programs

  • Equipment (camera/editing/lighting/props, etc)

  • Insurance & Licensing

  • Car & transportation costs

  • Internet and office expenses

  • Tons of Research and professional development courses/Degrees

  • Taxes & Invoices

  • Time for Publishing Applications, Grants, Artist proposal submissions

  • Wedding shows & Exhibitions

  • Hours of Photographing

  • HOURS of post-processing

We put in a lot of love, sweat, tears, and a massive amount of learning, constantly bettering our craft for newlyweds and families. Each session is treated with the utmost importance, professionalism, and diligent customer care. I pride myself in helping each client be captured as their authentic self and, most importantly, have fun during their session!

Now, if you have a more modest photography budget, don't fret. See if your dream photographer can offer a payment plan to assist you. Can the package be modified to come closer to your budget with reason?

Hiring a new photographer is not the wrong route as an alternative. However, much risk comes with that. Can they manage their files appropriately so they don't accidentally delete your entire wedding? Have they shot a wedding before as a second shooter/understudy? Do they have any photography training before hiring them? Do they have an agreement? Have they done any mock sessions with models/couples you can pre-view? Are they licensed? Can they do an engagement session before you commit to them for your wedding?

These will be some of my questions if you are seeking a photographer that is starting. Usually, newbie photographers charge about $1500 for a full 8-hour wedding coverage, so make sure you do your homework before putting down a deposit.
